TOPIC: Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) Legislation
With Elliot Schreur, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI)
The Maryland General Assembly recently passed the Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) legislation, and it will impact every business, nonprofit, and employee in the state of Maryland. Don’t be unaware or uninformed as to how this legislation will impact you and your organization, whether you are a business owner, a manager, or an employee.
Join us on Wednesday, October 4th, to hear from the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Family and Medical Leave Insurance, Elliot Schreur. Assistant Secretary Schreur will visit with us and give an update on the implementation of the FAMLI legislation, including the costs to individuals and businesses, the benefits to those covered, and the implementation dates of this mandatory program.
Elliot Schreur is the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI). In this newly created role, Elliot leads the development of Maryland's paid family and medical leave insurance system, which will provide working Marylanders with the financial security they need to take time off of work for medical reasons or caregiving duties.
Elliot brings to this role an expertise in social insurance, which he developed through more than a decade of research, policy analysis, and benefits administration for state and federal government programs. Most recently, he served as the Chief of the Division of Policy and Research for the Office of Paid Family Leave in the District of Columbia’s Department of Employment Services. There, he developed the policies and administrative procedures for one of the first state-wide paid leave programs in the country. The District of Columbia’s Paid Family Leave program was launched in 2020 and has since served as an early and successful example of a state-level paid leave program.
Before this, he served as a Research Associate at the National Academy of Social Insurance where he provided expertise on Social Security, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, and paid family and medical leave. He was also a Policy Analyst for New America, where he contributed to research on retirement, savings, and tax policies to improve financial security for low- and middle-income families. He holds a Masters in Public Policy from The George Washington University.
